British Wildlife Photography Award Ceremony (14/10/11)

Alexandra Palace was the venue for this year’s award ceremony of the British Wildlife Photography Awards and the Wildlife Xpo event on Friday 14th October. Richard Shucksmith was presented with the prize for being the overall winner of this year’s competition with his superb image of a mauve stinger jellyfish, Pelagia noctiluca taken at Sula Sgeir, 40 miles north of Scotland.

The award was presented by broadcaster and author, Nick Baker and the chairman of Natural England, Mr Poul Christensen C.B.E. at an evening wine reception. Matt and Adam went along to support Richard as he answered many questions about his image, met with the BWPA organisers and took part in a book signing event at the Wildlife Xpo.

The BWPA is now in its 3rd year and is establishing itself as a major UK competition at the forefront of promoting our natural heritage and the importance of its conservation. This year saw the awards coincide with a new exhibition, Wildlife Xpo. Wildlife Xpo allowed visitors to find out about wildlife travel holidays, wildlife art, wildlife watching equipment and much more. The major highlights were provided in the format of talks and debates by leading photographers and naturalists including the likes of Mark Carwardine, Andy Rouse and Chris Packham.

British Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2011 (26/09/11)

Our very own Richard Shucksmith became British Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2011 today. The image was also the category winner for Coast and Marine. Richard said, "living on a boat the M/V Halton and diving some of the remote islands off the west coast of Scotland is an exhilarating experience. Sula Sgeir, meaning gannet rock, is 41 miles north of the Butt of Lewis. These wild and exposed islands provide habitat for an astounding variety and abundance of marine life. Places like these feel all the more special because, although remote and difficult to get to, they are a part of our heritage."
