Part
I
With
the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) about to launch National
Nest Box Week, Matt and Polly decided to get to work. A couple of
kind folk with half an acre of woodland plus garden gave permission
for a nest box extravaganza at a mystery location in Dorset. Nesting
species last year included robins, wrens, blue tits and spotted
flycatchers. Other frequent visitors include great tits, goldcrests,
nuthatches, green and great spotted woodpeckers, barn and tawny
owls and kestrels.
Four
nest boxes were made following designs obtained from the Wildlife
Trusts and another three were bought or donated. Pesky squirrels
frequent the area and so the tit boxes have benefited from armoured
plating at the entrances. Matt and Polly spent a couple of sunny,
January afternoons sawing, drilling, nailing and hanging out in
the woods in an effort to provide homes for a variety of birds from
a blue tit to a woodpecker. Currently we have 2 boxes with 25mm
holes, 2 with 32mm holes, a wren box, an open fronted flycatcher
box and a woodpecker box.
Will
the pesky squirrels be kept at bay? Will the homes be attractive
enough for the fussy flycatchers, picky peckers or tentative tits?
Check
back regularly throughout the spring and summer for images of doting
parents and hungry kids and news of the expected avian residents.
