Yorkshire Coast Sunrise Spectacular

Featuring some of the UK's finest countryside, the North Yorkshire coast makes a stunning venue for coastal landscape photography, its east coast location ideal for spectacular dawn skies over the mighty North Sea. Rugged and beautiful, the North Yorkshire coast skirts the edge of the North York Moors National Park winding its way past iconic east coast towns such as Scarborough and Whitby. Exposed and pounded by the North Sea, this coast can be as harsh as it is magnificent, the weathered rocks, wave-cut platforms and dramatic cliffs providing some outstanding photographic possibilities.

Join Earth In Focus photographer and North Yorkshire resident George Stoyle as you take in the pre-dawn glow in preparation for a dramatic sunrise at some of Yorkshire’s classic coastal sites. George can offer landscape workshops at any location on the Yorkshire coast, your session tailored however you wish, to include many of the classic locations such as Saltwick Bay, Robin Hood’s Bay, Filey Brigg, Bempton Cliffs and Flamborough Head. Wherever you wish to meet, the day will be structured so you will be in the right place at the right time to make the most of the changing light throughout the morning. Locations are subject to change depending on time of year, weather conditions and tide.

For early morning sessions, even in the summer, warm clothes are essential. Please bring your own hat and gloves as well as waterproof jacket, trousers and good quality walking boots. You will also need comfortable clothes for walking which may include shorts and t-shirt in the summer months, so please keep an eye on the weather forecast. The price does not include food or hot drinks so please bring your own.

A compact camera can be used but please be aware these do have certain limitations. I do have the following camera equipment for hire:

Typical Session

We would begin the session early at Filey Country Park, where we would walk down to the beach and along the base of Carr Naze out to the Brigg to prepare for sunrise. The tiered platforms along the edge of the Brigg allow for some spectacular photography as the tide washes over, forming countless mini-waterfalls and swirling patterns of white water amongst the glistening ribbons of seaweed. The countless rock pools are perfect for glowing sunrise reflections and as the sun comes up we can move out to Brigg End stopping at Horseshoe Gully, a jagged precipice which forms a natural breakwater resulting in frequent and impressive stormy displays, ideal for some spectacular long-exposure filter photography.
